Don Doré It is with great sadness that I write this. Dad was admitted to Alta Bates Medical Center in Oakland a week ago Saturday due to some ongoing issues with his heart. A week ago Thursday night a emergency procedure was performed to add two more stints and a temporary/mini heart pump, essentially saving his life and buying some time for his body to heal on its own or heal enough that they could wean him off the pump and surgically repair/replace/bypass his mitral heart valve. This past Saturday, due to complications, Dad had to be heavily sedated, placed on a special kind of dialysis and intubated. This allowed his body to rest and the hope was that healing would continue and they’d be able to wean him off the pump. Monday morning they tried several times to wean him off the pump, but his blood pressure dropped and they weren't able to do so. Monday afternoon the decision was made to move him to UCSF without further delay. UCSF sent two ambulances and a medical team. They were able to take him off the pump, put him on a VA ECMO and safely transport him to UCSF Monday evening where he remained in critical condition receiving a high level of care. Doctors were hopeful and encouraging. We all hoped that Dad would wake and recover enough to be able to receive a permanent heart pump (LVAD). Unfortunately, despite all efforts and a courageous fight on his part, as fireworks lit up the sky on July 4th, Dad went home. Peacefully. Surrounded by his loving family. We miss him terribly, mourn his passing deeply and will carry his love and memory with us always.

Sept. 26,1940 - Oct.13, 2014

Marylou passed away early Monday morning after a valiant two-year struggle with leukemia. She will be missed by her husband, Tex, her son Michael and his partner Ray, her daughter and son-in-law Elaine and Jim Minnich and her grandchildren, Ethan and Grace Minnich. She also leaves her brothers and sisters-in-law, Dick and Judy Jennings, and Jim and Diana Jennings, and her brother and sister-in-law Gary and Jan Bunney, as well as many other relatives and friends.

Born Mary Louise Jennings to Dick and Alice Jennings on Sept. 26, 1940, she grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, attending public and Catholic schools. Marylou showed an early talent for music, studying piano and singing. In high school she started doing shows at military bases, hospitals, and even at Folsom Prison.

In 1962 on a visit to the Seattle World’s Fair she met the love of her life, Dallas “Tex” Bunney. After three years of correspondence and several visits, they were married in June, 1965, and moved into their first house in Edmonds. She enjoyed 49 happy years with “Mr. Wonderful,” as she was fond of calling him.

She was a loving mother to Mike and Elaine, and delighted in her grandchildren Ethan and Grace. While raising her children she managed to work in various clerical and administrative capacities through the years, while also making time to use her many creative and artistic skills, which included sewing, handicrafts, calligraphy, and furniture refinishing, among others. More often than not she used her talents to make things for others, whether sewing a garment for family, making crafts for a Christmas bazaar, or designing decorations and planning the menu a benefit dinner.

The family thanks all of you for your many prayers, cards, and support. She was overwhelmed by the concern she was shown.  Funeral services were held Saturday, Oct. 18, at St. Hubert Catholic Church, 804 Third St., Langley, Wash. (on Whidbey Island). Burial at Holyrood Cemetery in Seattle, Wash

Dear Family and Friends:

Dan is now on his journey back home to Waynesburg, Pennsylvannia to be laid to rest next to his parents and grandparents.  Dan took his last breath very peacefully in his sleep surrounded by his family on Sunday July 22, 2018 at 4:15PM.

I am grateful for Hospice care.  They made everything peaceful for us and Dan.  I am very comfortable and at peace knowing Dan is no longer suffering from Lewy Body Dementia. His disease was slowly taking him away from us.

He became bedridden on Monday, July 16th.  During that week he told us he would be leaving soon.  We assured him we would all be okay and he could let go and float with the angels when they came for him.

Thank you for your love and friendship to Dan.  Family and friends meant the most to him and it was what he valued most in life.

There will be no service here in California.  We do hope to have Dan's memorial website online very soon.

Love,

 Russel Means

Deceased  October 22, 2012

"Russell C. Means, the charismatic Oglala Sioux who helped revive the warrior image of the American Indian in the 1970s with guerrilla-tactic protests that called attention to the nation’s history of injustices against its indigenous peoples, died October 22, 2012 at his ranch in Porcupine, S.D., on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation from esophageal cancer. He was 72."

"He rose to national attention as a leader of the American Indian Movement in 1970 by directing a band of Indian protesters who seized the Mayflower II ship replica at Plymouth, Mass., on Thanksgiving Day. The boisterous confrontation between Indians and costumed “Pilgrims” attracted network television coverage and made Mr. Means an overnight hero to dissident Indians and sympathetic whites." Means participated in the 1969 Alcatraz occupation.

"In the ensuing 71-day standoff with federal agents, thousands of shots were fired, two Indians were killed and an agent was paralyzed. Mr. Means and his fellow protest leader Dennis Banks were charged with assault, larceny and conspiracy. But after a long federal trial in Minnesota in 1974, with the defense raising current and historic Indian grievances, the case was dismissed by a judge for prosecutorial misconduct."

"Mr. Means also survived several gunshots — one in the abdomen fired during a scuffle with an Indian Affairs police officer in North Dakota in 1975, one that grazed his forehead in what he called a drive-by assassination attempt on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota in 1975, and one in the chest fired by another would-be assassin on another South Dakota reservation in 1976."

"Russell Charles Means was born on the Pine Ridge reservation on Nov. 10, 1939, the oldest of four sons of Harold and Theodora Feather Means. The Anglo-Saxon surname was that of a great-grandfather. When he was 3, the family moved to the San Francisco Bay area, where his father, a welder and auto mechanic, worked in wartime shipyards.
Photo"

"In 1987, Mr. Means ran for president. He sought the Libertarian Party nomination but lost to Ron Paul, a former and future congressman from Texas. In 2002, Mr. Means campaigned independently for the New Mexico governorship but was barred procedurally from the ballot."

"Mr. Means began his acting career in 1992 with a principal role in “The Last of the Mohicans,” Michael Mann’s adaptation of the James Fenimore Cooper novel, in which he played Chingachgook opposite Daniel Day-Lewis and Madeleine Stowe. Over two decades he appeared in more than 30 films and television productions, including “Natural Born Killers” (1994) and “Pathfinder” (2007). He also recorded CDs, including “Electric Warrior: The Sound of Indian America” (1993), and wrote a memoir, “Where White Men Fear to Tread” (1995, with Marvin J. Wolf)."

"He was married and divorced four times and had nine children. He also adopted many others following Lakota tradition. His fifth marriage, to Pearl Daniels, was in 1999, and she survives him."

"Mr. Means cut off his braids a few months before receiving his cancer diagnosis. It was, he said in an interview last October, a gesture of mourning for his people. In Lakota lore, he explained, the hair holds memories, and mourners often cut it to release those memories, and the people in them, to the spirit world."

James L. Owen February 5, 1940 - January 7, 2018 Resident of Walnut Creek Jim died on his own terms with his brothers, sister, son, beloved wife of 36 years, and her sister surrounding him. His true loves were simple - family and mountains. Jim was a dedicated back packer, exploring almost the entirety of the Sierra Nevada range. Taking the lead from his older brother Bill, Jim took his younger family members on trips to Yosemite, Death Valley and many other locations. His work as a land surveyor kept him outside in the clean air he loved. We know he is hiking above the timberline today. He is preceded in death by his parents Ben and Thora, Sister-in-law Barbara Owen, Brother-inlaw Jim Kinkella and his daughter, Renee. He is survived by his wife of almost 40 years, siblings Bill, Dave (Janet), Jeanne and John (Perii), his son Chris (Gena, Vivienne), and adopted daughter Alexandra (Courtney, Amber, Anne) and Ariel’s sister Barb Barnes. Jim will be missed by many friends from his men’s group of 35 years, book club friends and others who shared a love of his signature smile, belting laugh and thoughtful insights as well as his way of finding a debatable topic. In lieu of flowers, Jim asked that donations be made to the Sierra Club or Yosemite Conservancy. Please take time today to appreciate the beauty in everyone you meet. The family wishes to thank Kaiser Hospice of Martinez for their exquisite care and attention to Jim and his village during this difficult time. Private family services have been held. Frank was a very proud man to serve in the U.S.M.C from 1958-1964.  He was a Corporal E4 and an Expert Rifleman.  Friends of the U.S.M.C. had given him his name "Frank".  Not too many people know this. Golf was his passion.  For eight years after moving to Discovery Bay, he commuted to San Jose every Tuesday to golf with his buddies.  He loved fishing and teaching his granddaughters how to fish. He loved his family and friends and will be missed by all.

Martin Jerald "Jerry" Quinn 1940 - 2006 passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, February 25, 2006. He was many things to those who knew him: a friendly co-worker, a very devoted and loving son, brother, father, and grandfather. He spent 45 years as a truck driver - his CB handle was "Grumpy", and even when he was grumpy he would often laugh it off. He loved NASCAR, especially Dale Earnhardt and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. He was also a lifelong Raiders fan, and played football at his community college (before being distracted by the fairer sex!). Mostly, he hated any fuss on his behalf or too much attention, and yet he touched us all so deeply. Jerry left us all too soon. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered. He is survived by his children, Karen, Jason, and Jonathan, his grandson Brandon, his brother Doug, his mother Doris, and some number of ex-wives. You were stubborn to the last - We love you old man, very much, and always will! Family and friends are gathering to celebrate the life of Jerry Quinn on Tuesday, February 28, 2006 at 1:30 p.m. in the Reflection Chapel at Chapel of the Chimes Memorial Park and Funeral Home, 32992 Mission Blvd. Hayward.

Reported by Pat Williams Sobrero 5/2012

Cynthia Bell Simecek Julian
Cynthia was born on May 8, 1940 in Brunswick, Maine, to Victor Hugo Simecek and Vivien Alida Bell. She was the second of three daughters, and grew up in Pocatello, Idaho with her older sister Vicki and younger sister Kathe. As a champion swimmer, she broke five state swimming records in 1954 and was state champion again in 1955, as well as being a frequent victor on the tennis courts.
She attended high school in San Leandro, California and swam on the Bay-O-Vista Swim Team before joining the nationally reknowned Santa Clara Swim Club led by coach George Haines. Cynthia was Gerber Scholarship award recipient and attended San Jose State University, where she was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority. In her early twenties, with unquenchable energy, stamina and perseverance, she was a three-time alumni of the Lake Michigan Long Distance swims in 1961, 1962 and 1963. Bowling and softball victories were also added to her swimming and tennis accolades.
In June of 1962, Cynthia married Lt. Robert Harry Julian (later Lt. Colonel) a graduate of the United Stated Military Academy at West Point, New York. She began a twenty year career as an "Army Wife" moving with her family every year throughout the United States and overseas, in addition being the sole parent during Robert's two tours of duty for Vietnam. Her first child, Jaimi Catherine Julian, was born at the West Point Hospital on June 4, 1964. Her second child, James Robert Julian, was born in the same hospital on February 14, 1966. They moved from New York to Santa Clara, California for one year while Bob was serving a year in Thailand. From there they moved as a family to Ft. Belvoir, Virgina for one year and Nashville, Tennessee for one year. When Bob was sent to Vietnam for a year, Cyndi, Jaimi and Jimmy lived in Los Alamitos, California. Upon his return, the family lived in Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas for a year before being sent to Camberly, England for one year. Cyndi always made the most of these opportunities for her kids, teaching them about England and the song "England Swings" in anticipation of the move. After England, the family lived in Hanau, Germany for one and a half years and Darmstadt, Germany for one and a half years. While they were in Darmstadt, Cyndi had her third child, Jeffrey Edward Julian, on April 7, 1975 at the military hospital in Weisbaden, and he was the apple of her eye. She took great joy in sharing the world with her children... from England's Stonehenge and the Edinburough Tattoo; "Learn to Ski Weeks" in Garmische, to vacations in Athens and Paris.
Bob's assignment as "Professor of Military Science" at UCLA brought the family once again to Southern California ... Westchester, Malibu, Culver City, Arcadia and Walnut. All three kids followed in their mother's footsteps and had wonderful swimming careers -- Jim and Jeff both procuring college scholarships for swimming at Cal State University Los Angeles and the University of Southern California respectively.
Cynthia achieved her degree and registered nursing license later in life, despite the fact that her Parkinsons tremors started before she even graduated. Her entire life was spent as a caretaker… first as the best mom Jim & Jaimi could ask for; for Jeff long after they left for college; and then for her ailing mother when Jeff went to college. With great pain and limitation in her own walking, Cynthia cared for her mother on a daily basis for the last ten years of her mothers’ life. The last five years have been fraught with great difficulty for Cynthia – at times beyond comprehension – and yet she fought on, embodying larger than life the strength, persistence and courage she had taught all of us.
Many of you knew her as the incredibly loving and supportive mother of Jeff, Jim and Jaimi; and some of you knew her only after years of struggle with Parkinsons disease and all of its cruel complications… but all who came to know her could not help but be touched by her kind heart, her generous spirit, her fierce loyalty, her strength of will, her love of life and, most importantly, her compassion for others. She consistently put others first, championed the under-dog and defended those who were not present to defend themselves.
Of all the gifts Cyndi gave us, it is teaching us a world without limits; the courage to pursue our dreams, and the unconditional love she gave that define her spirit, her love of life and of all those around her. We will forever treasure the beautiful moments she gave us. Our only solace is to know that in her quiet, kind and giving way, her legacy has left the world a better place, and how blessed we are to call her Mom, daughter, sister and friend.

Deceased August 5, 2009

Diane was born on April 3, 1940 at Hayward Hospital in Hayward, California. She was the daughter of Walter and Minnie Widlund. Diane was raised in San Leandro, California. Always at the ready with a good joke, she grew up to be quite a humorous person. While some who knew Diane might describe her as an idealist, her friends and family understood well that Diane was always in pursuit of life's endless possibilities and opportunities available to her.
There was always a certain style and inventiveness to Diane. She was a dynamic, self-expressive person who was forever looking to celebrate the endless possibilities life had to offer. She had a knack for being clever, creative and witty, and for others, was a joy to be around. While she was often fiercely independent, it seemed as if many others looked to Diane for inspiration, leadership, wisdom and even courage. Diane was always more than willing to share life's experiences with her loved ones.
